Atlanta Mayor: Ossoff Took Millions From Out of State 'Because He Wants to Win'

June 20, 2017

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed (D.) said Tuesday on MSNBC that Georgia Democrat Jon Ossoff has taken millions of dollars from donors outside of the district he is vying to represent "because he wants to win."

Ossoff, the Democratic candidate in a special House election for Georgia's sixth congressional district, has received criticism for raising little money from the district he is running to represent. According to campaign filings, 96.6 percent of Ossoff's contributions come from outside of Georgia.

MSNBC's Craig Melvin asked Reed about Ossoff's out-of-state war chest.

"Why has he taken so much money from outside that district?" Melvin asked.

"Because he wants to win," Reed said.

"The fact of the matter is, he has been subject to just an amazing barrage of negative advertisement from across the country," Reed added. "He's been subjected to a president of the United States' tweets. And he wants to win."

"And so when you're in a competitive election and you want to win, and you have people whether they're from the district or across the United States, you accept their support, because his job is to deliver for the people of the sixth, the district that he's from," Reed concluded.

Ossoff's campaign has cost over $40 million, a record-breaking number. He goes to the polls against Republican Karen Handel on Tuesday.
