NY Democrat Slams Iran Deal: Obama 'Unbelievable in His Chutzpah'

July 23, 2015

A prominent Democratic member of the New York State Assembly said Thursday that President Obama was "unbelievable in his chutzpah" for signing a nuclear deal with Iran.

As the Washington Free Beacon reported, Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D.) "was among a group of pro-Israel demonstrators who were arrested while protesting the Iranian nuclear deal outside the Manhattan office of Sen. Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) on Thursday."

Later that day, Hikind denounced the "disastrous" deal on Fox Business Network’s Cavuto: Coast to Coast.

"There was a demonstration trying to convince Sen. Schumer—usually very smart guy, reads pretty fast—to come to a decision on the disastrous deal with Iran that will guarantee a nuclear bomb for them," Hikind said.

As the United Nations rushes to ratify hundreds of billions of dollars in sanctions relief for Iran, Hikind says it falls to the U.S. Congress to rebuke the deal.

"The United States is still the most important country in the world and if the Congress of the United States overrides the president—and I think we have a real shot at getting that done, it will be a lot of work but it is very doable—it will be a very powerful statement and also will have major repercussions," Hikind said.

Hikind devoted special criticism to President Obama, who has cast the issue as a choice between his deal and war.

"This president is unbelievable in his chutzpah," Hikind said. "He talks about having an honest debate and open debate, but if you disagree with him you're a warmonger. That’s exactly what my president said to me and to Americans—most Americans—who don’t trust this deal, don’t trust Iran."

A strong majority of Americans said they do not believe that Iran will abide by the terms of the nuclear deal in practice, although most say they support the deal in theory.

Hikind is one of a growing number of Democrats who say they oppose the nuclear deal.
