Crowley on Clinton Fainting: Weather at 9/11 Event Was 'Incredibly Stifling'

September 11, 2016

Rep. Joe Crowley (D., N.Y.) called the weather "incredibly stifling" to explain Hillary Clinton's fainting spell Sunday morning on MSNBC.

He was on the phone with anchor Alex Witt to talk about the September 11 anniversary memorial after it was reported that Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton became overheated and left the event early.

Video showed her nearly collapsing and requiring assistance to get into a van. She went to her daughter's New York apartment and then, after briefly greeting reporters and saying she felt better, traveled to her home in Chappaqua.

"I didn't see anything unusual, but I can tell you is that many of us continue to have a sigh of relief when a gust of wind would come by because it was incredibly stifling," Crowley said.

Witt then showed still photos from the event of Clinton's attire and commented how she was wearing a long-sleeved suit jacket and that it was dark material. She remarked that Clinton didn't appear to be dressed for the hot weather, but instead dressed for the dignity of the event.

"I think she was there for that purpose, was not about herself—I was with her five years ago. It was never about her. It was about the events that happened 15 years ago, and I wanted to be there to commemorate that and remember that," Crowley said.

Crowley continued by saying that Clinton was probably wincing that the 9/11 anniversary became about her since he believed that she would want it to be about the families of the victims. He also told Witt that he himself felt overheated and had to drink some water.

"I'm actually in an air-conditioned car. I've gotten some food and a bit of water, and a little iced tea and i'm heading back to Queens to my home," Crowley said.
