KU Killjoys Probably in the Right

June 12, 2013

Apparently there's a Twitter feed called @KUBoobs dedicated to, well, take a guess. Users submitted pics of themselves in low topped University of Kansas garb, which the feed would then tweet out to its 60,000 followers. For instance:

Who could object to this? Well, the University of Kansas:

The University of Kansas has sent a firm cease-and-desist order to a Twitter fan page called @KUboobs, which is dedicated to collecting photos of (mostly) women flaunting their cleavage in low-cut KU shirts. ...

The cease-and-desist letter itself uses sweeping language and furious legalese. Nevertheless, school officials insist that the University of Kansas has no problem with @KUboobs. They say the school merely wants the page to stop hawking and selling KU-branded merchandise for legitimate copyright reasons.

It turns out that KU Boobs was not just posting pics, it was also selling swag:

I have to say, I understand where the Jayhawks brass is coming from. You can't just let any Joe Sixpack rip off your trademark and plaster it all over merchandise. It's not just a matter of dollars and cents, profit and loss. It's also a matter of endorsement. And, given the weaponization of gender and the proliferation of speech codes on college campuses, KU could find itself in hot water if campus officials were thought to be endorsing such risqué displays of flesh. Better just to say that this sort of thing

is entirely unacceptable—"How dare you sell a product with our logo on it, we don't approve of this!"—while turning a blind eye to this sort of thing:

You want to limit your exposure, you know?
