White House press secretary Jay Carney said he "believes" President Obama has returned 5 percent of his 2013 salary to the U.S. Treasury Tuesday in the White House press briefing:
JON KARL: A last little bit of housekeeping, the president last year
was to give back ten percent of his, I’m sorry five percent of his salary to express some solidarity with those who had cutbacks because of the sequester. Has he returned that money to the Treasury yet?
JAY CARNEY: I believe the answer to that is yes, but I’ll check for you.
The Washington Free Beacon's Elizabeth Harrington reported the White House repeatedly refused to address inquiries into whether the president returned an estimated $20,000 to the federal government. President Obama promised to return 5 percent of his salary last year as a show of solidarity with federal workers affected by sequestration.
