Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said he would accept the results of November's general election "if I win," showing he was not backing off his controversial remarks from the previous night's debate.
Trump made the "major announcement" during his campaign stop in Ohio, and at first he appeared to be saying he would accept the outcome regardless of who was victorious before pulling the rug out.
"I would like to promise and pledge to all of my voters and supporters, and to all of the people of the United States, that I will totally accept the results of this great and historic presidential election ... if I win," he said, drawing huge cheers.
During the debate on Wednesday, moderator Chris Wallace asked if Trump would accept the results of the election. Trump has, for weeks, warned of voter fraud and a potentially "rigged" election.
"I will look at it at the time," Trump said. "I’m not looking at anything now. I will look at it at the time."
He added he would leave everyone in "suspense" as to accepting the results, drawing sharp criticism for casting doubt on the integrity of the electoral process. Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton said his answer was "horrifying."
