Ocasio-Cortez: Impeachment Could Prevent a 'Disastrous Outcome' in 2020

November 14, 2019

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) on Wednesday said that impeaching President Donald Trump is necessary to prevent a "disastrous outcome" in 2020.

Ocasio-Cortez said on CNN's Situation Room that House Democrats need to move quickly, citing the "potential compromise of the 2020 elections," that could lead to "a potentially disastrous outcome."

"This is not just about something that has occurred, this is about preventing a potentially disastrous outcome from occurring next year," she said.

Ocasio-Cortez framed her concerns as a matter of national security, stating that House Democrats need to "come together as a caucus" and use impeachment to defeat the "corruption" of the Trump administration.

Ocasio-Cortez has supported impeaching Trump since before she was elected to Congress. As a candidate in June 2018 she said that if House Democrats wanted to impeach the president they have "the grounds to do it." On Wednesday, she reiterated her belief that Trump violated the emoluments clause because foreign officials had stayed at Trump properties.

House Democrats launched public impeachment hearings against Trump on Wednesday after months of an informal impeachment investigation into his dealings with Ukraine.
