Republicans More Trusted Than Dems To Manage Economy by Record-High Margin: Poll

October 3, 2023

Americans trust Republicans to handle the economy over Democrats by record-high margins, new polling indicates.

The data from a Gallup poll conducted last month show that 53 percent of those asked said the GOP does "a better job of keeping the country prosperous," while just 39 percent said the same about Democrats. The numbers mark the highest advantage for Republicans on the question since 1991.

Economic issues are sinking President Joe Biden's overall approval rating: Americans disapprove of his economic policies 56 percent to 24 percent, according to polling by Investor's Business Daily.

The White House remains defiant, however, in defending its track record on the economy. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said this week that "Bidenomics has worked so well that you have Republicans ... taking credit for things that the president pushed forward."

Republicans also have a 22 point advantage over Democrats in the Gallup poll on protecting the country from military and terrorism threats.

The numbers come after another poll found that voters see the Democratic Party as more ideologically extreme than the Republican Party.

The data, from a Morning Consult poll conducted last month, show voters see Republicans as less extreme by a 9 point margin. Just 38 percent said the Republican Party is too conservative, compared with 47 percent who said the Democratic Party is too liberal. Respondents also said Republicans are more capable at governing and keeping the country safe.
