"Morning Joe" host Joe Scarborough argued Wednesday that Donald Trump's bipartisan immigration meeting on Tuesday was an attempt to disprove Michael Wolff's book, but the president ended up doing the opposite and proved Wolff's claims true.
"The reason he did this Mika was obvious," Scarborough said to his co-host Mika Brzezinski. "He wanted to disprove Michael Wolff's book."
"He wanted to prove that he was in complete control of his mental facilities, and actually, what he did was show that he wasn't," Scarborough continued, according to Mediaite.
In Wolff's recently released book, Fire and Fury: Inside Trump's White House, the author depicts Trump as an incompetent child whose top aides, Wolff writes, all have questioned his fitness for office.
Scarborough argued the president couldn't hold his ground at the meeting.
"He couldn't keep up with where he was. He would amble over and say what Democrats wanted to hear: 'yes, I'm with you,'" Scarborough said.
"And then Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) would, you know, sort of figuratively grab him by the shoulder and say, 'grandpa, come on over here, let's come on,'" he continued, referring to the House Majority Leader.
Co-host Mika Brzezinski quietly said "on my god" to herself as Scarborough launched further into his tangent.
Scarborough continued, "'Papa, sit down here, don't hurt yourself. This is what you really believe.' But grandpa kept kind of wandering back and forth."
Trump's behavior, as described by the MSNBC host, showed Scarborough that, while the president was trying to defend his mental competence, he ended up doing the opposite.
"The very thing he was trying to prove, he disproves," Scarborough said.
"He has no idea about the issues, and has no positions on the issues that actually drive his base the most," he added.
