White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters at the daily press briefing on Monday that there is "frankly no need" for a special prosecutor to investigate whether there was collusion between President Donald Trump's campaign aides and Russia.
Fox News reporter John Roberts addressed some of the questions Democrats in Congress have about the president's recent firing of FBI Director James Comey and how the Russia investigation will progress.
"First of all, Jeff Sessions is leading the search," Roberts said. "A lot of Democrats think that because he recused himself from the Russia investigation, he should not be in that position."
He went on to say that Democrats believe there should be a special prosecutor appointed to lead the investigation, which was dismissed by Spicer.
"I think this is a process that's running completely as it should," Spicer said. "It's being headed by the deputy attorney general and the attorney general. As you note in the past, the FBI director reports to the deputy attorney general. They continue to move through a series of highly qualified candidates."
Spicer called on another reporter after he answered Roberts' question, but Roberts had a follow-up question about whether the investigation needed a special prosecutor.
"There's frankly no need for a special prosecutor," Spicer said. "We've discussed this before. You have two Senate committees that are looking into this, the FBI's conducting their own review, and I think if you even look at what acting [FBI] Director [Andrew] McCabe said last week, he said they have the resources they need and the work continues."
"It's been made very clear that there's been with respect to the president himself, both Sen. [Chuck] Schumer, Sen. [Dianne] Feinstein, Sen. [Joe] Manchin, and everyone else who have been briefed on this, have been very clear that there was no collusion with respect to the president himself," Spicer concluded.
