Opportunity Lives Features Dallas Community Leaders in New Documentary

Opportunity Lives has released another documentary as part of its "Comeback" series that tells stories of "resilient Americans overcoming adversity in the nation's cities and communities."

The latest features two of the most prominent community leaders in Dallas, Texas, who have worked to combat the influence of gangs in the city. Their contributions are even more relevant given the heartache Dallas has gone through since five of its police officers were killed in a mass shooting last week.

Opportunity Lives released a press release about the new installment:

In the wake of last week's tragedy in Dallas, Opportunity Lives is releasing a new documentary featuring two of the city's prominent community leaders who have been at the center of the city's attempts to heal in the past several days. Pastor Omar Jahwar, a gang intervention specialist, has stood by Dallas Police Chief David Brown's side. Antong Lucky, a former head of the Dallas Bloods gang turned activist, developed a non-profit helping to help young people escape the gang life as he did. Both represent the positive change that has been underway in the city even before the horrific events last week, a sign of a strong community ready to face the future. They are part of a group called "The Urban Specialist."

Lucky is featured in the trailer for the new documentary, which can be found here. The full episode will be released on Tuesday, to kick off the new season of Opportunity Lives' Comeback series.

The Comeback series - now in its second season - tells the inspiring, true stories of resilient Americans overcoming adversity in the nation's cities and communities. The purpose of Comeback is to create a discussion about what works in the fight against poverty, and how to expand economic opportunity for all Americans.

Directed by filmmaker Clare Burns of Calabur Productions, Comeback is a gritty but inspiring look at communities and individuals who have been written off or ignored for too long.

John Hart, editor-in-chief of Opportunity Lives, commented on the release of the documentary:

"As our nation mourns last week's tragic events in Dallas, Opportunity Lives is honored to celebrate local heroes who are risking their lives to promote non-violent change, redemption and reconciliation. This documentary, and the other episodes in the upcoming season of Comeback, will tell the stories of some of those heroes who are working to bring healing amidst unspeakable suffering. As Dr. King said, 'Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.' Comeback shows King was right."
