Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, refused during an interview on The Kelly File to condemn the "CP" Time skit performed by Hillary Clinton and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.
"Hillary got into some trouble recently and she did a skit with Mayor Bill de Blasio here in New York where they made a reference, he made a reference to 'CP,' and that is understood as a racial slur: Colored People," host Megyn Kelly said.
"They played it off like it, they meant ‘Cautious Politician.’ And then she came under fire for participating in this, even from some of her advocates," Kelly said. "Did she make a mistake?"
"You know, I have been asked over and over to comment on different aspects or things that each of our candidates have said. I just think it's not appropriate for me to weigh in on things like that," Wasserman Schultz said. "That's better asked of the candidates themselves and the people that are specifically advocating on behalf of those candidates."
"I am focused on the general election," Wasserman Schultz said.
In the aftermath of the skit, Clinton blamed De Blasio for it. De Blasio said that he intended for it to mock him, not racial minorities.
Former president of the NAACP Ben Jealous, who supports Clinton's primary opponent Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.), said that Clinton should apologize for the skit. Al Sharpton however, teased de Blasio for it.
The skit caused controversy at the time, but it did not have a negative effect on Clinton's performance at the polls. She rolled to a decisive victory in Tuesday's New York primary that all but clinched her bid for the nomination.
