Harrington Discusses Trump, Possible Contested Convention on Lou Dobbs

Free Beacon staff writer Liz Harrington appeared on Lou Dobbs Tonight Friday where she discussed the recent rough spot Donald Trump had as well as a possible contested Republican convention.

Earlier this week, Trump gaffed when he there should be a punishment for women who get abortions. The Trump campaign later walked back his comments saying that only doctors should be punished for performing illegal abortions.

"Single-issue women voters who are only going to the polls because of abortion I don't think are likely to vote for Trump anyway," Harington said. "What I think will be interesting to see if these kind of bad two couple of weeks Trump has had, if it will have any effect against him. You've seen throughout this campaign that he can say whatever he wants and it doesn't hurt him."

Harrington said that there are signs coming out of Wisconsin, whose primary is Tuesday, that Trump could lose the state. A Washington Free Beacon poll shows that Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas) has a lead of 4.8 points over Trump.

When asked about the possibility of a contested convention at the Republican National Convention this summer, Harrington said there could be some backlash.

"The strategy right now really is Cruz and Kasich being spoiler to prevent him from getting the delegates he needs and then have a contested convention to get another person in there," Harrington said. "That would have really bad backlash where people aren't necessarily supporting Trump yet just because people will say, 'Hey, he's winning.'

"If he has a big lead [coming] to the convention in July, they are going to say, 'Hey, he won give it to him.' I think they don't like this tendency by these sort of so called establishment types to choose the nominee. I think there would be tremendious backlash."

Fellow panelist Tammy Bruce added that it would be a mistake to misjudge the mood of the people.
