Harrington Discusses Government-Funded Plays Pushing Left-Wing Agendas

December 18, 2015

Washington Free Beacon reporter Liz Harrington appeared on Fox Business Network's Varney and Company to discuss her findings from the most recent "waste book."

One outrageous discovery was the taxpayer-funded National Endowment for the Arts bankrolling plays pushing left-wing agendas, for instance one about a lesbian couple that's against gun ownership.

Full exchange:

STUART VARNEY: How's this for outrageous government spending? The National Endowment for the Arts is funding plays that push liberal agendas. What you're looking at right there is the San Francisco drag queen who does performances promoting food stamps, and you pay for that. Liz Harrington discovered all of this from the Washington Free Beacon. She's all over the story. Now what's this about lesbians, a play against guns, but we pay for it. Tell us.

LIZ HARRINGTON: Right, this is the world premier of a play called "Cocked" that is about two -- it's a multiracial lesbian couple who are staunchly opposed to gun control. And so I guess you're going to sit through three hours of--

VARNEY: Wait, hold on, Liz. They are opposed to gun control.

HARRINGTON: No, I'm sorry. They're staunchly opposed to gun ownership. They're gun control activists, and then they have to cope with, you know, violence or something and have to figure out if they actually like guns or not. Who knows? It's a play that we paid $10,000 to see.

VARNEY: This is the National Endowment for the Arts, is that correct?

HARRINGTON: Right, right.

VARNEY: That's the same organization that funded, I hate to use these words, but "Piss Christ" I believe. That's where the crucifix was dipped in urine, paid for by the taxpayer through the National Endowment of the Arts and now it's lesbians against guns.

HARRINGTON: Right, and every liberal pet issue got an art project funded. You have climate change artwork. You have bicycle-inspired sculptures. You have plays about food stamps. You have, you know, all of these different things about gender identity. Any liberal pet issue, it got an art project and we paid for it.

VARNEY: Is this all in San Francisco or is this popping up elsewhere?

HARRINGTON: No, it's across the country. The lesbian play is in Chicago, I believe. The drag queen is in San Francisco. It's all across the country. Thousands of projects were awarded. And when you have this massive amount of government-funded art you're going to get a lot of questionable spending.

VARNEY: By the way, the spending bill has just passed the house, Liz, so I'm sure you'll be pleased to know this kind of spending has been just funded for next year. [laughter]

HARRINGTON: Right, exactly.
