Cruz Calls for Special Prosecutor to Investigate IRS

Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas) again called Thursday for Attorney General Eric Holder to appoint a special prosecutor in the IRS conservative targeting scandal, rather than "Democratic donors," and get to the bottom of the missing Lois Lerner emails at the heart of the probe.

"We need a special prosecutor with meaningful independence to make sure that justice is served and that our constitutional rights to free speech, to assembly, and to privacy are protected," he said. "It saddens me to say that the U.S. Department of Justice under Attorney General Eric Holder has become the most partisan Department of Justice in the history of our country."

"Americans need a guarantee that the IRS will never be used again to target an administration's political enemies," he added.

Cruz went on to praise the bipartisan condemnation of former President Richard Nixon for using the IRS to do that during his tenure, before going on to say he was disappointed that Democrats had not exhibited similar outrage for the Obama administration's actions.

"It saddens me that there is not a single Democratic member of this body who has had the courage to stand up to their own party and say this abuse of power, using the IRS to target citizens for political beliefs, is wrong," he said.
