CNN senior White House correspondent Jim Acosta said Wednesday that President Donald Trump has the "world record" for injecting politics into the aftermath of terrorist attacks.
Host Brooke Baldwin asked Acosta about comments from Trump after a man drove a truck down a pedestrian walkway in Manhattan, killing eight. The suspect is a native of Uzbekistan and authorities say he had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State prior to the attack.
The day after the attack, Trump called for an end to a diversity visa program that he referred to as a "Chuck Schumer beauty."
"I think President Trump, Brooke, now has the world record for injecting politics into the aftermath of a terror attack," Acosta said. "That is exactly what has happened in the last 12 hours or so as the president has been tweeting about this."
Baldwin didn't flinch at Acosta's remarks.
Acosta then talked about the president's comments about the justice system and the diversity visa lottery, which has come under scrutiny as the investigation into the suspected attacker has occurred.
"So, the president is playing politics with this," Acosta said referring to the diversity visa lottery program.
Acosta's comments drew criticism on Twitter, with Hillary Clinton's remarks being made hours after the massacre in Las Vegas being pointed to as an example of politics in the wake of a tragedy.
