Police killed one suspect after a man wielding a knife attacked Ohio State University on Monday, sending at least nine people to the hospital, one of whom is in critical condition.

The other individuals are in stable condition, according to the Columbus Fire Department.

The attacker was 18-year-old OSU student Abdul Razak Ali Artan. "He was a Somali refugee who left his homeland with his family in 2007, lived in Pakistan, and then came to the United States in 2014 as a legal permanent resident of the United States," according to NBC News.

Columbus Police Chief Kim Jacobs said police are looking into whether the assault was an act of terrorism, Fox News reported.

The school had issued an emergency alert Monday morning warning of an active shooter on campus, although none of the victims appear to have been shot.

"Victim injuries include stab wounds, injury by motor vehicle, and other injuries that are being evaluated," Ohio State said, according to CNN. The suspect was fatally shot by local authorities.

The college's emergency management advised students to "Run Hide Fight" earlier in the day.

The school has since said the scene is now secure but certain areas are still closed. All classes have been cancelled on Ohio State's Columbus campus.

The now deceased suspect had rammed his vehicle into a group of pedestrians on a street corner before attacking them with a butcher knife, according to the school's police chief, Craig Stone.

CNN interviewed a student who was on campus at the time the warning was issued and described the chaotic scene.

Ohio State is one of the largest public universities in the U.S., with a student population of more than 65,000 people across the state.
