Trump Batters Clinton During Exchange Over Trade Deals

September 26, 2016

Donald Trump called out and battered Hillary Clinton over her record on trade deals during the first presidential debate Monday night.

Trump pointed out that Clinton has had a lengthy career in public life but has only changed her views on trade during the 2016 campaign.

"You’ve been doing this for thirty years. Why are you just thinking about these solutions right now?" Trump said. "For thirty years you’ve been doing it and now you're just starting to think of solutions. I will bring back jobs. You can’t bring back jobs."

"Well, actually, I have thought about this quite a bit," Clinton said.

"Yeah, for thirty years," Trump responded.

"Well, not quite that long," Clinton said.

Trump then pointed out that Clinton’s husband, former President Bill Clinton, signed NAFTA into law.

"I think my husband did a pretty good job in the 1990s. I think a lot about what worked and how we can make it work again," Clinton said.

"Well he approved NAFTA. He approved NAFTA, which is the single worst trade deal ever approved in this country," Trump said.

After Clinton tried to point out good things about NAFTA, Trump brought up the Rust Belt, a part of the country he argues has been hurt by the free trade deal.

"Your husband signed NAFTA, which was one of the worst things that ever happened to the manufacturing industry," Trump said.

"That is you opinion," Clinton said.

"You go to New England, you go to Ohio, Pennsylvania, you go anywhere you want Secretary Clinton, and you will see devastation where manufacturing is down thirty, forty, sometimes fifty percent," Trump said. "NAFTA is the worst trade deal, maybe ever signed anywhere, but certainly ever signed in this country."

Trump then pointed to Clinton’s prior support of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP, while she was President Obama’s secretary of state.
