NRCC Trolls Dem Candidate With Book on Socialism

The National Republican Congressional Committee sent an unusual gift to a Democrat running for Congress in Pennsylvania: a book titled Why Socialism Works.

Chrissy Houlahan received the NRCC's gift to mark the beginning of fall and to accompany Sen. Bernie Sanders' introduction of single-payer health care legislation, PoliticsPA reports.

"Fall brings out the best in everyone—and the NRCC is no exception," NRCC spokesman Chris Martin wrote in an announcement of the present. "That's why we sent Chrissy Houlahan a friendly gift today in the form of Harrison Lievesley's highly acclaimed book, Why Socialism Works."

What Martin did not note in his statement, and presumably wanted Houlahan to discover on her own, is that the 169-page book answers the title's question with two words at the center of each page: "It doesn't."

In addition to the book, Martin included a handwritten note to Houlahan.

"Your support for Bernie Sanders' socialist single-payer health care legislation would cost taxpayers $32 trillion and give the federal government full control of our health care," the note said.

Houlahan is challenging incumbent Rep. Ryan Costello (R., Pa.) in Pennsylvania's sixth congressional district. National Democrats have been strongly supportive of Houlahan's campaign.
