Republican Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) will deliver a "no-holds-barred" verdict on Donald Trump's presidency in a forthcoming memoir, his publishers announced Monday.

The book, titled The Restless Wave: Good Times, Just Causes, Great Fights, and Other Appreciations, begins with McCain's failed 2008 presidential campaign, before covering his time in the Senate during Barack Obama's tenure in the White House, the 2016 election, and its aftermath, AFP reported.

"Candid, pragmatic, and always fascinating, John McCain holds nothing back in his latest memoir," which is set to be released on May 22, according to publishers Simon & Schuster.

The senator will also "share his experiences during the divisive 2016 election and his no-holds-barred opinions on the current developments coming out of Washington," the publishing house said.

McCain, who is currently battling brain cancer, wrote the memoir with his long-time aide Mark Salter, who has been described as the senator's "alter ego" and was a key fixture in his 2008 White House bid. Salter was also a prominent "never-Trumper" during the 2016 presidential election, at one point claiming that Trump has the "emotional maturity of a six-year-old."

A long-time maverick willing to oppose certain Republican Party positions , McCain has been a vocal critic of Trump. Throughout the 2016 presidential campaign, McCain and Trump traded barbs, most notably when then-candidate Trump mocked the senator for being captured during the Vietnam War.

Once Trump took office, the two men clashed over GOP efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare. In June 2017, McCain cast the deciding vote in opposition to a so-called "skinny" repeal of the health care law. McCain has also criticized Trump for his foreign policy agenda, most recently hitting the president for congratulating Russian President Vladimir Putin on his reelection victory earlier this month.
