CNN Cuts Away From Trump's Campaign Launch After Airing Biden's Full Rally

June 18, 2019

CNN cut away from President Trump's official rally launching his 2020 reelection campaign, despite airing former Vice President and leading Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden's entire 29-minute campaign announcement last month.

Trump was in Orlando on Tuesday night, where he was joined by several family members, including First Lady Melania Trump. Before the first lady and Trump spoke, Vice President Mike Pence delivered remarks. CNN started airing the rally when the first lady stepped up to the podium to speak and then cut away from Trump a little over five minutes into his speech.

Shortly before CNN cut away the crowd starting chanting, "CNN sucks" for about 20 seconds before Trump started speaking again.

"By the way, that is a lot of fake news back there," Trump said. "You know what I say? The amount of press we have tonight reminds me of the Academy Awards before it went political and their ratings went down the tubes."

CNN's John Berman, who was filling in for Anderson Cooper, then cut away from the rally and mentioning Trump's leading remarks about the economy. Berman additionally informed his viewers there were "attacks on the media" from the President but then turned to a segment previewing a potential general election matchup between President Trump and Biden.

The Washington Free Beacon analyzed CNN's coverage of Biden's kickoff rally in Philadelphia last month and discovered they aired the entirety of former Second Lady Jill Biden's remarks and then aired all of Biden's speech, which lasted just over 29 minutes.
