Trump: We Have to Think About Profiling Muslims, It's Common Sense

June 19, 2016

Donald Trump said Sunday that the country needs to again consider profiling Muslims during an interview on Face The Nation, calling such measures "common sense."

CBS host John Dickerson asked Trump if a Muslim buying weapons should receive extra scrutiny. While Trump said he wasn't sure, he added the danger of radical Islamic groups still posed a problem.

"You like to speak plainly," Dickerson said. "In December, we talked and you said there possibly should be profiling. Just as a bottom line here, are you talking about increasing profiling of Muslims in America?"

"Well, I think profiling is something that we're going to have to start thinking about as a country, and other countries do it," Trump said. "You look at Israel, and you look at others, and they do it, and they do it successfully. You know, I hate the concept of profiling, but we have to start using common sense, and we have to use our heads."

Trump cited an example of one of his own speeches where large numbers of people were in attendance, and even those who, as he put it, "clearly" didn't have weapons went through the same screening as those that "looked" like they could.

"They were going through the same scrutiny, absolute same scrutiny as somebody else that looked like it could have been a possible person," he said. "So, we really have to look at profiling. We have to look at it seriously, and other countries do it, and it's not the worst thing to do. I hate the concept of profiling, but we have to use common sense. We're not using common sense."
