Monday marked the first Sept. 11 anniversary in more than a decade that MSNBC did not re-air NBC's real-time live coverage of the terrorist attacks in 2001.
Since 2006, MSNBC had made a tradition of rebroadcasting "The Today Show" and its live coverage of the 9/11 attacks on the morning of its anniversary.
Like the rest of cable news, MSNBC has been focused on covering Hurricane Irma and its effects on Florida. However, CNN's Brian Stelter reported last week that MSNBC executives had already decided to move away from the rebroadcast.
"We have decided internally to move away from the re-air and instead focus on other ways of the commemorating [of] 9/11 such as long-form documentaries," a network spokesman said.

MSNBC cut away from its hurricane footage to air the moment of silence led by President Donald Trump at the White House at 8:46 A.M., which was the time the first airplane struck the World Trade Center in New York City.
It cut away again shortly after 9:30 A.M. to show a 9/11 ceremony at The Pentagon in Washington, D.C..
