Harrington: Trump Should Keep Courting Democrats to Get Tax Reform Bill Passed

September 28, 2017

Washington Free Beacon reporter Elizabeth Harrington appeared Thursday on Fox Business, where she said President Donald Trump should keep courting Democratic lawmakers in order to ensure the passage of the GOP-backed tax reform plan.

Host Neil Cavuto of "Cavuto: Coast to Coast" introduced the topic by discussing current opposition to the GOP tax reform framework, which was unveiled by a group of Republican lawmakers and administration officials yesterday. Cavuto asked Harrington why opponents have criticized the ambitious economic growth outlined in the new plan.

"Well I think they’re stuck in what they call this 'new normal' of the post-recession era where growth has been abysmal. It’s been, you know, two percent," Harrington said.

Harrington outlined that the reason for slow economic growth has been because of restrictions on corporations.

"We have such a burdensome tax code, and burdensome tax rates on corporations where American business can’t grow," Harrington said.

The WFB reporter said this type of growth used to be obtainable and even normal. Harrington argued the United States can get back there if the "Senate and House can get their act together and get these tax cuts that the Trump administration is proposing."

Although the process of forming and passing a tax reform bill has started, Harrington pointed out that the House and Senate would only have about two weeks to bring together the two versions of the bill before the end of the year in December. She said making that happen will be "very complicated."

"It’s going to be very complicated for them to do that, as we saw with health care," Harrington said.

"President Trump should keep targeting these Democrats in states like North Dakota and Indiana, states that he carried," she said. "He should keep courting these Democrats to come on board because I don’t know how reliable the Senate Republicans will be on tax reform if health care is any indication."
