A Missouri man was forced to shoot his hammer-wielding brother after he attacked him and his own girlfriend on Thursday.
Gary Peters, 48, passed away after being shot in the stomach by his own brother during a fight late Thursday night, local Fox affiliate KTVI reported. Peters’ girlfriend told police that he had attacked her with a hammer. When his brother intervened, Peters turned the hammer on him.
After he was attacked, Peters’ brother retrieved a firearm. He ended up shooting the attacker in the stomach. When police arrived they found the 48-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound and transported him to the hospital. He died a short time later.
Peters’ girlfriend was also taken to the hospital and treated for blunt force trauma to the head. His brother was taken into custody, but there are no reports of any charges being filed against him thus far.
Peters’ hammer attack is the latest in a long line of attackers who were outgunned by their would-be victims. A Florida man was forced to shoot his own son after being attacked with a sword in May. A North Carolina man was forced to shoot his father after being attacked with a chainsaw in January. A Washington state concealed carrier saved a convenience store clerk from a hatchet-wielding attacker in March. A Georgia man was shot by an elderly couple after threatening to kill them and throwing potted plants at them in July.
