Ellison's Must Read of the Day

My must read of the day is "Pick Your Clinton: Democrats Want Duo on Trail," in Roll Call:

Democrats are gearing up to unleash the Clinton Dynasty.

They hope deploying the popular former White House occupants could help drum up money and hype in what could be a tough election year for the party. Democrats see the power couple as an asset, especially because Republicans have no singular unifying figure who can hit the trail.

But good thing there’s two of them.

Democratic operatives say each half of the Clinton duo appeals to different segments of the electorate—so assignments to races must be deliberate and strategic.

On the surface this is one of the best campaign strategies Democrats have. With Obama's approval rating dropping to record lows it seems smart to send in two of your most popular politicians to excite the base, increase turn out, and perhaps appeal to independents.

The Clintons really are the best for that job—Bill's popularity is at 64 percent; Hillary's is at 54.

But for Hillary Clinton and her potential presidential campaign, it's best to make as little news as possible, right now—2016 is two years away. Stepping into the midterms may benefit the party, but Hillary has a brand to protect. Her approval is still high, but it's down 5 points since February. If the first week of her book tour is any indication, campaigning in the midterms seems like it may be a bigger gamble than it's worth.
