Woman Stabbed, Suspect Shot Blocks from Capitol Building in Washington, DC

A man suspected of stabbing a female victim was shot by a security guard at Union Station in Washington, D.C., a location just blocks from the U.S. Capitol Building.

The incident occurred just before 1 p.m. in the nation’s capital Friday, the Washington Post reported.

According to the D.C. Police Department’s Twitter account, both individuals harmed in the incident are being treated for their injuries.

"Union Station Update: Female stabbed. Male suspect shot by security officer. Both being treated for injuries. Investigation continuing," D.C. police wrote around 1:30 p.m.

The station houses Amtrak as well as the Red Line of the Washington, D.C., Metro subway system. It is also a stop for several buses. According to police officers at the scene, at least one gunshot was fired near the McDonald’s restaurant close to the gates to Amtrak.

The incident occurred on the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks amid heightened security awareness in the nation’s capital.

The U.S. Senate Sergeant-at-Arms wrote on Twitter Friday just before 1 p.m., "Due to police activity, remain clear of the area near Union Station. Please avoid this area until further notice."

About 30 minutes later, the police activity had concluded.
