Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) discussed on Monday night the need to focus on issues that directly impact American voters, because he argued, "Americans are not staying up every day worrying about Russia's interference in our elections."
The senator from Vermont appeared on "Late Night With Seth Meyers" where host Seth Meyers asked whether focusing on the Russia story is unwise for Democrats.
"Do you worry sometimes these Russia stories can to the left provide an excitement of, 'Oh, this is almost over,' when in fact it will probably go on forever and they need to focus on the ballot box as opposed to Mueller?" Meyers asked.
Sanders accepted that premise and said "we've got to take on Trump's attacks against the environment, against women, against Latinos and blacks and people in the gay community."
He placed particular emphasis on basic economic concerns.
"Americans are not staying up every day worrying about Russia's interference in our election. They're wondering how they're going to send their kids to college. They're wondering how they're going to be able to pay the rent," Sanders said.
Sanders continued to list economic issues that Americans are worried about, arguing lawmakers should not loose sight of those issues while the investigations into Russian meddling and collusion continue.
"Our job is to create an economy that works for all of us ... and those are issues that absolutely we cannot afford to lose sight of."
