A new poll of registered voters from Hampton University has Republican Ed Gillespie with an eight point lead over Democrat Ralph Northam.
The poll, conducted last week by the Virginia university, found that 41 percent of those surveyed would vote for Gillespie and 33 percent for Northam. Twenty-seven percent said they still don't know who they will vote for.
The poll comes as reports that Democrats are becoming "increasingly anxious" about the race continue to flood in.
Voters told Hampton University that they wanted the next governor to make "working to improve the economy and create jobs" their top priority.
Despite Gillespie's lead over Northam in the poll, a majority of voters said that they approve of the job that Democrat Terry McAuliffe is currently doing as governor. A majority also said that they disapprove of Republican President Donald Trump.
Recent polling from other institutions continues to show Northam with a comfortable, yet shrinking, lead over Gillespie. The current RealClearPolitics poll average shows Northam up by a margin of 5.8 points.
Voters will head to the polls on Nov. 7.
