Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will headline a fundraiser for the Democratic nominee in Virginia's gubernatorial race, Lieutenant Gov. Ralph Northam.

The Northam campaign confirmed the report but declined to comment further, the Washington Post reported.

The race has been extremely close despite Northam's attempts to tie Republican nominee Ed Gillespie to President Trump, who remains very unpopular in Virginia.

The current Democratic governor, Terry McAuliffe, has been a longtime friend of the Clintons, and is not running again because of Virginia term limits.

McAuliffe talks with Bill Clinton "every day, sometimes several times a day," Politico reported in July. In Hillary Clinton's recently released memoir, What Happened, she described how McAuliffe talked to Bill on the night of her 2016 election loss.

Northam has indicated that former President Barack Obama will also campaign with him, but has not released details.

The fundraiser headlined by Clinton will take place on Oct. 4 in New York.
