President Donald Trump tweeted his support Wednesday for House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R., La.), who was wounded along with several others in a shooting in Alexandria, Va.
"Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, a true friend and patriot, was badly injured but will fully recover. Our thoughts and prayers are with him," Trump wrote.
Police said the shooter was in custody.

Vice President Mike Pence wished Scalise and the Capitol Police who were hurt a "speedy recovery."

The White House also released a statement from Trump.
"The vice president and I are aware of the shooting incident in Virginia and are monitoring developments closely," he said in a statement. "We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected."
