Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has apologized for her recent public attacks on Republican nominee Donald Trump and his candidacy for president.

She wrote in a statement that her comments to the media that blistered Trump were "ill-advised."

"On reflection, my recent remarks in response to press inquiries were ill-advised and I regret making them," she wrote. "Judges should avoid commenting on a candidate for public office. In the future I will be more circumspect."

Ginsburg, a reliably liberal vote on the Supreme Court, told the Associated Press last week that she did not want to consider the possibility of Trump winning the White House, noting the next president could make several Supreme Court appointments. Her remarks raised eyebrows given that Supreme Court justices generally stay out of presidential politics.

Despite the criticism of her breach of decorum, Ginsburg did not relent, later telling CNN that Trump was a "faker" with no consistency in his remarks. Trump responded that she should resign from the court for her conflict of interest, and in an interview with Fox News, he questioned the elderly judge’s mental capacity.

The left-leaning New York Times editorial board wrote that Trump was right to criticize Ginsburg’s remarks and called on her to "drop the political punditry and the name-calling."
