Actor and liberal activist George Clooney is reportedly planning to host a fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
Page Six reported that plans are being made for Clooney to co-host a fundraiser featuring multiple celebrities that could net millions of dollars for Clinton’s presidential campaign as she pushes to clinch the Democratic nomination for president.
The fundraiser could take place as soon as March 24, when Clinton has three fundraisers planned in the Los Angeles area.
"I am a Hillary supporter. I am doing a fundraiser for her," Clooney said last week in an interview with The Guardian.
Clooney, a strong supporter of President Obama, has not always waxed positively about Clinton. The actor labeled the former first lady "the most polarizing figure in American politics" in 2006 before she mounted her first presidential campaign, which was ultimately unsuccessful in the primary against then-Sen. Obama.
Clooney sought to downplay his previous statement during an interview with Fusion’s Jorge Ramos last May.
"She was a polarizing figure in American politics because, at the time, I felt that there were as many people that would show up to vote against her because she was Hillary and for whatever reasons they’d been designing that for quite sometime," Clooney said.
He also pledged to do anything he could to help her presidential ambitions.
Clooney’s support proved quite lucrative for Obama during his reelection campaign. The actor held a $40,000-per-ticket fundraiser for the president in 2012 that raised $15 million.
Clooney’s fundraiser will come at an opportune time for Clinton, whose high-dollar donors in Hollywood have started to dry up in recent weeks as her competitor for the nomination, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.), has enjoyed a windfall of small-money contributions.
Last week, Clooney praised Sanders for focusing on economic inequality but added that his single-mindedness on the issue is ultimately is "downfall."
"I really love Bernie Sanders, and am really glad he is in the debate. He is forcing the conversation to things that never get talked about in U.S. politics: disparity between the rich and the poor, which is getting worse and worse every day," Clooney said.
During the same interview, he also called Republican frontrunner Donald Trump an "opportunist" and a "xenophobic fascist."
