At least 26 schools in New Jersey were evacuated or locked down Tuesday after receiving bomb and shooting threats.

NBC New York first reported that nine high schools in Teaneck, Garfield, Tenafly, Clifton, Fair Lawn, Leonia, Bergenfield, Englewood, and Hackensack received threats from an individual who claimed to have planted a bomb. All nine schools are located in Bergen County.

Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino later told Reuters that at least 26 schools in New Jersey received threats and that all of them were cleared of danger after searches.

The threats were called in to each of the schools starting at around 8:50 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Police initially said that at least three of the schools received the threats via voicemail. At least one of the messages also reportedly included a mass shooting threat. Schools in Massachusetts, Delaware, and Iowa also received similar threats Tuesday.

Police in Clifton said in a statement that there was no indication of the validity of the threat to Clifton High School but that law enforcement and the school district were acting out of "precaution."

"At this time, there is no indication of any validity to the threat. However, all precautions are being taken in order to ensure safety of the entire school district. Additional information will be made available as the investigation progresses," Clifton police said.

Students at some of the New Jersey schools were evacuated, while others were sheltering in place.
