Amy Walter: Hillary Clinton's Real Legal Problem Could Make Her Unelectable

August 17, 2015

Political analyst Amy Walter said Monday that Hillary Clinton’s ongoing email scandal has left the Democratic frontrunner dealing with an investigation that could leave her unelectable for legal reasons.

"There is a real worry. I think the really worry for Democrats is this isn’t just a scandal that is nagging them," she said on PBS. "There is an actual, real, honest-to-goodness, whether it’s a smoking gun or investigation, legal problem that could make her unelectable in the fall, and there is not a second choice right now for Democrats."

Whether Clinton’s unusual email practices result in legal consequences remains to be seen. The string of bad headlines has left her with a political problem, however, including poor ratings from voters on whether she’s honest.

"This is absolutely something that is nagging on her campaign. Every week she releases new policy proposals and every week there is a new story about the emails that in many ways overshadows it," NewsHour panelist Tamara Keith said. "If you were a casual observer … you would think that Hillary Clinton’s entire campaign was about her email server and the problems with the email server."

Clinton joked about wiping her private server over the weekend, quipping that she liked Snapchat because those messages delete themselves.
