On Thursday’s MSNBC’s The Cycle, Luke Russert compared the political fallout of the Iran nuclear deal for Democrats similar to the political fallout of Obamacare.
Back in 2010, when the Affordable Care Act was passed, 63 House democrats lost their seats to Republicans. After the 2014 mid-term elections, 30 of the 60 Democrat senators who voted for the Affordable Care Act lost or did not seek re-election.
"I have spoken to a lot of Democrats that are quite worried about the millions that will be mobilized against this deal by groups that dislike Iran," Russert said. "They’re going to get a lot of heat on it similar to the health care law about five years ago. When that went home for an August recess, Democrats did not come out looking too good after that."
Many congressional democrats have expressed concerns about the deal. In order for the deal to go through, President Obama will need to have a veto-proof majority to prevent Congress from voting down the deal.
The Obama administration is working to reassure congressional Democrats that the nuclear agreement is a good deal. President Obama sent Vice President Joe Biden to lobby House and Senate Democrats, and sent Secretary of State John Kerry, Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz, and Secretary of Treasury Jack Lew to explain the details of the agreement to Congress.
