President Joe Biden on Sunday made his latest gaffe when he falsely told voters at a campaign event in Detroit that he was vice president during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"When I was vice president, things were kind of bad during the pandemic and what happened was, Barack [Obama] said to me, ‘Go to Detroit! Help fix it,’" Biden said Sunday night at the annual Fight for Freedom Fund dinner hosted by the NAACP.
"Well, the poor mayor, he’s spent more time with me than he ever thought he’s gonna have to!" Biden added.
Biden’s term as vice president ended in January 2017, three years before the start of the pandemic. The 81-year-old president possibly meant to reference his visits to Detroit in 2015 to address the Motor City’s declining auto industry and severe financial struggles.
Biden also took aim at presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump during the NAACP dinner. "Folks, Trump isn’t running to lead America," Biden said. "He is running for revenge. Revenge is no way to lead the country. You can't build a future on revenge."
"What do you think he would have done on Jan. 6 if black Americans had stormed the Capitol? No, I'm serious. What do you think? I can only imagine," Biden added.
Biden’s address to the NAACP came after he delivered a commencement address Sunday morning at Morehouse College, a historically black men’s college in Atlanta.
Janiyah Thomas, a media coordinator for the Trump campaign, said Biden is going "on a pandering tour because he knows what we all know: Without the Black vote, there is no Democrat Party."
