Former president Donald Trump's lead over President Joe Biden has grown even larger, according to a CNN poll released Tuesday.
In a 2024 rematch between the candidates, 49 percent of registered voters would support Trump, while only 45 percent would support Biden, according to the poll. The 80-year-old Biden faces dismal approval ratings, along with voters' sense that "things are going poorly in the United States" and widespread fears about his age, CNN reported.
The poll comes days after a New York Times/Siena College poll shocked the political world by showing Trump beating Biden in five of the six most important swing states. Trump's leads over Biden in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, and Pennsylvania range from 4 to 10 points, while Biden is ahead in Wisconsin by only 2 points, the poll found.
Both polls found that Biden is losing ground among constituencies that contributed to his 2020 victory over Trump. The president's support among young voters, independents, black voters, and Hispanic voters—all of whom supported him by double digits in 2020—has drastically diminished. Independents and voters under 35 are now backing Trump, black support for Biden has plummeted by 25 points, and Hispanic voters are about evenly split, the CNN poll found.
The Times/Siena College poll, meanwhile, found that Trump is receiving 22 percent support from black voters, an unprecedented amount for a Republican, and that Biden has an only 1-point lead among Hispanics.
Biden's approval rating—39 percent—is the lowest for any president since Jimmy Carter, according to CNN, while 72 percent of Americans say things in the country are going badly. Sixty-six percent of registered voters told CNN that the economy is "extremely important" to their 2024 vote, an issue that will likely hurt Biden.
