Sen. Kamala Harris (D., Calif.) got a fact wrong in her opening debate statement Thursday, proudly declaring that President Donald Trump was definitely watching their debate when he was actually giving a speech in Baltimore.
Harris said she planned to spend the evening discussing her plans to address the nation's problems, but she said she first wanted to directly address Trump, "who we all know is watching." At that moment, however, Trump was at the Republican House retreat in Baltimore, where he was giving a speech airing live on C-SPAN.
"So President Trump, you've spent the last two-and-a-half years full-time trying to sow hate and division among us, and that is why we've gotten nothing done," Harris said. "You have used hate, intimidation, fear, and over 12,000 lies as a way to distract from your failed policies and your broken promises."
She added he had only escaped being indicted because of a Justice Department policy that prevents federal prosecutors from charging a sitting president with a federal crime. But she said the American people "are so much better than this."
"I plan on focusing on our common issues, our common hopes and desires, and in that way, unifying our country, winning this election, and turning the page for America," she said. "And now President Trump, you can go back to watching Fox News."
The line drew whoops and applause from the audience in Houston, but Trump won't hear it unless he sees it later on replay.
