A spate of new polling shows both a progressive candidate at the top of the ticket and a progressive constitutional amendment are starting to fade in popularity in Arizona, just as early voting ballots are about to arrive in mailboxes.
The Democratic nominee for governor, David Garcia, suddenly finds himself trailing incumbent Republican Governor Doug Ducey by double-digits in three different polls all released this week.
In the closest of the margins, an Arizona Republic poll conducted along with Suffolk University surveyed 500 likely registered voters and found Ducey leading by 12 points, with only 10 percent remaining undecided. Ducey garnered 50 percent support to Garcia’s 38.
A subsequent poll from Fox News gave Ducey a 55-37 advantage, and the most recent of all the polling came from Data Orbital, which showed Ducey still comfortably leading 50-35.
Also on the ballot for Arizona voters is a proposed constitutional amendment which would significantly raise the state’s renewable energy portfolio. Financial support for gathering signatures to place the measure on the ballot came exclusively from California billionaire and political activist Tom Steyer.
The results, again coming from the Republic and Suffolk University poll, showed the amendment losing if the election were held today by a 46-33 margin, and about 20 percent of voters remaining undecided.
In the midst of those trends remains the Senate race between Representatives Kirsten Sinema and Martha McSally. The Fox News poll showed Sinema leading 47-45, but also highlighted the race tightening by a single percentage point when compared to another Fox News poll from early September.
