President Donald Trump continued to stand by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh in the face of another accusation of sexual misconduct from his teenaged days on Wednesday, saying what was going on was a "disgrace."
Julie Swetnick said she witnessed Kavanaugh acting sexually aggressive while drunk at high school parties in the early 1980s, and she also made the incendiary charge that Kavanaugh and his friend Mark Judge were among a group of boys who spiked girls' drinks and participated in gang rapes at that time.
Kavanaugh, who has also denied charges that he sexually assaulted a girl at a high school house party and once exposed himself to a girl at Yale, said the story was out of the "Twilight Zone."
"It's just a con game," Trump said to reporters during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. "He's a high quality person. They're bringing people out of woods. They can do that to anybody ... It's really, really sad."
Trmp said the public was growing wise to what he characterized as political machinations by Democrats. Several top Senate Democrats, including Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.), have called on Trump to withdraw Kavanaugh's nomination.
Trump has been harshly critical of Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D., Calif.) in particular for sitting on the first accusation for weeks and never bringing up the matter during Kavanaugh's confirmation hearings.
"I think people are seeing what a disgrace these Democrat senators are when they come out with statements like that, when they don't even talk about it and then after the hearings are completely over, they come out with what they come out with. It's a disgrace what's going on," he said. "The good news is, the public is very smart and they get it."
He didn't answer a direct question about whether he thought all three women who have publicly accused Kavanugh were lying.
Trump called Swetnick's attorney Michael Avenatti a "low life" and added hopefully the matter would be "settled up and solved" and Kavanaugh would go down as one of the greatest Supreme Court justices ever.
Trump earlier tweeted Avenatti was a "third rate lawyer who is good at making false accusations." Avenatti, a Democrat, represents porn actress Stormy Daniels in her lawsuit against Trump and has been a ubiquitous presence on cable news over the past six months. He's even thrown around the idea of running for president in 2020.
