Obama Yells at His Own Rally Audience to Sit Down and Be Quiet When They Jeer Trump Supporter

November 4, 2016

President Obama became visibly annoyed with his North Carolina rally crowd on Friday for their continued jeering of a Donald Trump supporter, yelling at the audience repeatedly "Hold up!" and at one point ordering them to sit down and be quiet.

As Obama was reeling off criticisms of Trump during an event on behalf of Hillary Clinton, the audience began to shout down a person to Obama's left.

"Wait, wait, wait, wait. Hold up! Hold up! Hold up!" Obama said, holding up his hand. "Hey, hold up! Hold up! Hold up!"

As the crowd kept jeering and chanting Clinton's name, Obama shouted even louder. Finally, he sounded angry.

"Hey!" he yelled. "Listen up! I told you to be focused, and you're not focused right now! Listen to what I'm saying. Hold up! Hold up! Hold up! Hold up! Everybody sit down and be quiet for a second. Everybody sit down and be quiet for a second."

The crowd's buzzing finally came down, and Obama defended the Trump supporter in question, who he described as elderly and apparently a veteran.

"First of all, we live in a country that respects free speech," he said. "Second of all, it looks like maybe he might have served in our military, and we ought to respect that. Third of all, he was elderly, and we've got to respect our elders. And fourth of all, don't boo—"

"Vote!" the crowd shouted back.

"Don't boo! Vote!" is a common line of his on the campaign trail.

Obama said the stirring over the Trump supporter was an example of his supporters losing focus, something he said they couldn't afford to do.

"Just relax," he said.
