Retired people made up the second largest group of donors to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign in May, ranking only behind Wall Street firms, according to a new study published by Open Secrets.
Retired individuals have given a total of $26.8 million to Clinton out of her total $314 million raised, according to financial data. Clinton has been the top recipient of retiree donations since the beginning of the 2016 presidential election.
Retirees from the U.S. Department of Defense have given the presumptive Democratic nominee over $7,000. In comparison, they have given Republicans $340.
Clinton has struggled to build support among young Americans who overwhelmingly backed Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) during the primary election.
A GenForward poll of voters aged 18 to 30 released last week found that while a majority of younger Asian-Americans and black voters view Clinton favorably, the former secretary of state has low ratings among whites and Hispanics.
Only 26 percent of young white Americans and 49 percent of Hispanics hold a positive opinion of Clinton, the Associated Press reported. Both groups said she is not trustworthy.
The numbers reflect a troublesome trend given that President Obama decisively won the youth vote in 2012 and Clinton has spent much of her campaign attempting to reassemble the coalition that propelled him to the White House.
