State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf ruled out the possibility of U.S. coordination with Iran in Iraq during a press briefing Monday.
"We're not going to outline every discussion we, have, but to be very clear, we are not coordinating with, we do not want to coordinate with, we are not planning to coordinate with Iran in any way on Iraq, period," Harf said.
Harf drew a distinction between having "discussions" with Iran and "coordinating" with them.
"Obviously, we're open to having a discussion with them; we won't always outline all of those discussions, but in terms of the contents of what those discussions might look like, we are not coordinating with them."
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei recently claimed U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry had asked his country to coordinate with the U.S. coalition to fight the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL or ISIS).
