Former Justice Department official Greg Andres on Tuesday joined Robert Muller's team investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, a spokesman for the special council confirmed.

Andres, who worked under former President Barack Obama, became the 16th lawyer to join the team investigating Russia's election interference, Reuters reported. A spokesman for the Russia investigation team, Josh Stueve, confirmed the new addition.

From 2010 to 2012, Andres served as deputy assistant attorney general in the criminal division at the Justice Department. He most recently worked as a criminal defense lawyer in New York with the law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell.

Andres has a history of donating to the Democratic Party. The Federalists' Sean Davis noted that Andres gave $2,700 to Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's (N.Y.) campaign in March.

Muller has been criticized in the past for hiring two lawyers who donated the maximum contribution to Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign.

One of Muller's critics includes Dick Morris, former President Bill Clinton's White House adviser. Morris called the addition of Democratic donors "a huge mistake on Muller's part."
