Meghan McCain: Trump Will Lose His Base if He Keeps Hedging on Second Amendment

March 4, 2018

ABC commentator Meghan McCain said Sunday President Donald Trump's base would start to abandon him if he followed through on curtailing the Second Amendment or tariffs that would hike costs on consumers.

McCain, the lone conservative voice on the daytime talk show "The View," appeared on ABC's "This Week" in the wake of a tumultuous period for the Trump administration following Trump's seeming embrace of Democratic gun control proposals and announcing of new tariffs on aluminum and steel imports.

"This is coming off his discussion about the NRA and his seeming hedge on the Second Amendment earlier this week," McCain said. "You want to talk about loyalists leaving? Start screwing with the Second Amendment and what your beer will cost with your aluminum can. I'm telling you, that will be something that will finally make his base move."

Trump met with a bipartisan group of lawmakers last week and suggested he wanted to hike the age to buy long guns, pursue "due process second" in confiscating guns from dangerous people, potentially ban assault weapons and establish a universal background check system.

The NRA told the Washington Free Beacon that such proposals were "bad policy" that wouldn't keep children safe. The debate over reforming the nation's gun laws has dominated Washington since the high school shooting in Parkland, Florida, on Feb. 14, which left 17 dead.

Trump met with National Rifle Association official Chris Cox last week week in the Oval Office. Cox announced following the meeting that Trump didn't want gun control.
