Comedian Kathy Griffin warned Friday that Donald Trump "picked the wrong redhead" while commenting on the criticism she received this week for her controversial photo shoot, before lamenting shortly afterward that the president "broke" her.
Griffin held a press conference with her attorney, Lisa Bloom, to discuss images and video that surfaced Tuesday of her posing with a severed and bloodied fake head of Trump. The comic has come under fire for taking part in the photo shoot, which led CNN to fire her from the network's New Year's Eve coverage.
Speaking to reporters, Griffin first stood defiant in the face of the uproar, blaming the criticism on attention that Trump and his family gave to the story on social media.
"I'm not afraid of Donald Trump, he's a bully," Griffin said. "I've dealt with older, white guys trying to keep me down my whole life, my whole career."
"And this bully, this president, of all people is going to come after me?" Griffin continued. "He picked the wrong redhead."
Minutes later, Griffin, who is being investigated by the Secret Service following the photo shoot, changed her tune regarding Trump.
"I think he, I'm going to be honest, he broke me, he broke me," Griffin said while beginning to sob. "And I was like, 'No, this isn't right.'"
Griffin issued an apology on Twitter shortly after the controversy started. Many who oppose Trump have condemned Griffin's photo, particularly after it was reported that Trump's youngest son, Barron, was disturbed by the image of his father.
