Pelosi: Comey Made a 'Mistake' With Letter to Congress

November 2, 2016

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) told CNN correspondent Jamie Gangel on Wednesday that she believes FBI Director James Comey made a "mistake" on Friday when he sent a letter to members of Congress informing them that the bureau was reopening its investigation into Hillary Clinton's private email server.

Pelosi began the interview by praising Comey, saying that she was an "admirer" of his past decisions. However, she called his latest decision a "mistake."

"I think he made a mistake on this and he clearly has a double standard when it comes to Donald Trump. Keep him out of it," Pelosi said. "Just when it came to the hacking by the Russians, that the highest confidence of our intelligence community says the Russians did this. I know it privately because of being hacked by the Russians, and he says, well, it's too close to the election to talk about that."

Pelosi added that she does not think Comey could take the heat from Republicans who were upset over his previous decision back in July to recommend that no charges be brought against Clinton for allegedly mishandling classified material over her private server.

"Do you think he should resign?" Gangel asked.

"I'm not going to that place. I think that we have to just get through this election and just see what the casualties are along the way," Pelosi responded.

Comey reopened the email probe on Friday after federal officials uncovered emails on seized devices from Clinton confidant Huma Abedin and her estranged husband Anthony Weiner in a separate investigation, the Washington Free Beacon previously reported.

The New York Times reported the development on Friday, after FBI Director James Comey informed Congress that the bureau had discovered new emails related to the investigation into Clinton's email use as secretary of state.

Federal and local law enforcement officials have been investigating Anthony Weiner since last month over reports that he sent sexually explicit text messages and photos to a 15-year-old girl, which was first revealed by the Daily Mail.
