A Tuesday report detailing how businesses tied to Sen. Claire McCaskill (D., Mo.) have received $131 million in federal subsidies since she became a senator has already been turned into a political ad in Missouri.
The report from the Kansas City Star follows reporting on how McCaskill's husband has at least $1 million invested in a hedge fund tied to the Cayman Islands, one of the world's most notorious tax havens. The ad from Missouri Rising Action pairs the two to portray McCaskill, one of the richest members of Congress, as a hypocrite when it comes to taxes.
"As this week’s Kansas City Star report makes clear, Claire McCaskill and her husband have made millions off the backs of taxpayers, but she has said ‘no’ to tax cuts for hardworking Missourians," said Brian Rodgers, the group's executive director.
The ad begins by pointing out that she voted against the Republican tax cut that passed last year without any Democratic support. It then pivots to reporting on how McCaskill and her husband took advantage of tax loopholes to increase their wealth.
"Higher taxes for you," the ad concludes, "Millions in tax breaks for her."
