Fiorina and Trump Spar Over Immigration Policy

September 17, 2015

During Wednesday night's Republican presidential debate Donald Trump touted that if was not for him talking about illegal immigration, the subject would not be discussed as in-depth as it currently is. Carly Fiorina took immediate issue with Trump's comment.

Trump has faced scrutiny over his comments about wanting to build a wall between the United States and Mexico and forcing Mexico to pay for it. He has also started to take issue with birthright citizenship and has called for a repeal of the 14th amendment.

"A woman gets pregnant, she's nine months, she walks across the border, she has the baby in the United States and we take care of the baby for 85 years. I don't think so. And by the way Mexico and almost every other country anywhere else in the world doesn't have that," Trump said.

Trump went on to call the United States stupid enough to have birthright citizenship. In other interviews, Fiorina had said that Trump had been pandering. Fiorina started her answer by pointing out that the Republicans had spent a good amount of time discussing solutions to the illegal immigration issue. She issued a call for viewers at home.

"I would ask your viewers at home to ask a very basic question, why have Democrats not solved this problem? President Obama campaigned in 2007 and 2008 solving this problem. He entered Washington with these majorities in the House and the Senate, he could have chosen to do anything to solve this problem, and instead he chose to do nothing," Fiorina said.

Fiorina said to Trump that the 14th amendment would not go away with the wave of his hands, it would need a vote in Congress, and then it goes to the states.

"With all due respect, Mr. Trump, we have been talking about immigration for 25 years," Fiorina said.

Fiorina said that there are 300 sanctuary cities and San Francisco has been one of those cities since 1989 and that immigration system has remained broken.
